Intended Purpose:
This changes everything. The Clusterz is a revolutionary family-orientated shopping centre, located just beside the Dover MRT station, in an area which consists of schools and also heavily cluttered residential buildings. It has its ability to cater to a general age group, the entire part of the population, no matter if it is hungry students, shopaholics or residences and tourists. It has everything you need, from sporting facilities and recreation centre, to restaurants and shops. With its state-of-the-art GREEN technologies, it is definitely an economical choice to visit this shopping right away! :)

Concept behind design:

The building is built through shape borrowing from clustered flowers, thus the structure of the shopping centre is built in such a way that every "cluster" of the shopping centre is meant for a specific purpose, such as eateries, grocery shopping, etc. The building is also eco-friendly, and is a zero-energy building. It has lots of eco-friendly features, such as vertical gardens, daylighting, solar panels etc.

This project is intended for families who want cheaper housing without compromising a luxurious lifestyle. It also intends to promote green living and how nature's systems can be incorporated into modern human systems. For example, water flow around the building moderates temperates and also provides room for activities for the family, e.g boating. These streams eventually end up in the swimming pool. Also, to promote green living, synthetic trees would be introduced into the environment along with the natural trees. The exterior of the building is shaped like a conjoined circle and square, where the circle hosts the hall while the square represents the bedrooms. This allows the resident to have a 270˚ degree view of the outside. There will also be a rooftop garden for residents to hang out or have mini-parties.

On the second floor, there will be shops selling stuff related to elderly care and services such as clinic and dentistry for elderly. Concept of the design
The concept of the design is to make it elderly and children friendly. The upper half of the exterior of the building is colourful and vibrant to attract children. The basis of this design is to promote green bank buildings, while the world maybe heading towards the notion of commercialization, the design features of this bank building is designed to be able to make a "green building"

Colours

This design features vivid colors incorporated into the design, making work less dull. Sometimes when a person goes to work, we want to be welcome with the sign of immediate excitement, thus the vivid colors to brighten up the person's day. Especially when they are all banking staff and the whole environment is so stressful that these colors do mean much to them.

Underfloor Air Systems
The building also features an underfloor air system where raised-access floors serves as plenums for distributing cooled air throughout the building. The potential benefits of underfloor air distribution include improved thermal comfort, improved indoor air quality, reduced energy use, and improved flexibility for office moves, thus making it a great alternative compared to air conditioners

Floor-to-Ceiling Insulating Glass
The building has floor-to-ceiling insulating glass to contain heat and maximize natural light, and an automatic daylight dimming system to save electricity. It also reduces thermal loss, lowering energy consumption and increasing transparency

Write-up: The business of the Honey House mainly targets on a niche market. The Honey Honey is open to the public, but it is more tourist-orientated. Having a cheap rental, low operation costs and not congested roads makes it an ideal location for tourists. It also has easy back access and drop-off/pickup point, free roadside parking via Prince Philip Avenue which is best for coach/buses. In a local perspective like Singapore, people are unaware of how things are made. Building a Honey House can raise awareness of how honey is produced and the importance of honeybees and honey in relation to nature.

Intended use: It is to bring bus loads of tourists into the Honey House with top grade honey from all parts of the world.

Concept for design: Being a standalone building with not many buildings and facilities around, there is a need for a prominent design which quickly identifies that the building is a Honey House. Its exterior design is very similar to honeycomb-which is a mass of hexagonal wax cells. A hexagonal pattern is a signature indication of presence of honeybees. It will give tourists a feel that they are in a "Honey Hive" and their inside the honey storage.

The building is a shopping mall with ice skating rinks for the public and for private uses (national ice hockey team, for those in lessons). There are three levels. 1st level : Ice hockey stadium 2nd Level : large skating rink (for public) and shops 3rd level : smaller ice rink (for those in lessons) and shops. The lift starts from the first level and goes straight up, so there would be a linkway that links that level to the lift as the 2nd floor is smaller than the 1st, and the 3rd is smaller than the 2nd (so it looks like a christmas tree). The floors are in a shape of a flat cone as a christmas tree is in a cone like shape.

Concept

The building is shaped like a christmas tree because the main use of the building is the ice skating rinks. Since its ice skating, the themes related to this is snow, ice etc. Snow can be found during winter, and during winter there is christmas. During christmas there are things like presents, christmas trees etc. Using all these inter-related themes, the christmas tree was chosen because it's shape can be used for a building (using flat cones and decreasing the sizes for each, having the smallest floor at the top).

Intended use

The intended use of the whole building is to provide ice skating rinks for the public to use and to host ice hockey competitions or let the national hockey team have a rink for them to practice. There are also a rink for those in lessons. It is also a shopping mall so people going there need not be ice skating, they can only be there to shop.

The proposed design is a building with indoor courts and a personal space, something like a library.
The intended use is for students with no place to study to use the personal space available and also during wet weather, people can come and use the courts available.People can also use this place for gaming and meeting.
The concept of the design of the building is based on using a theme games. Why I choose a rubric cube as its main structure is because with this idea it is very adaptable as it can be merged and combined with different designs to make different designs.

This astronomy cafe serves to help people relax better since research shows that there are increasing amounts young Singaporeans suffering from depression. The building is shaped in a telescope to emphasize on the theme of astronomy within the cafe, since astronomy is a broad category, it would "tell" the customers to look at things from a wider perspective and hopes to help them relax in the process. Other than that, there are also other features within that will help in the relaxation of people.

This design is of a shopping mall-cum-leisure-park targeted at students and teenagers around the neighbourhood of Jurong West Avenue 3.
This shopping mall is for the convenience of students and teenagers whom want to relax after a day at school, have meals, study or do school projects, cultivate their learning, "hunt" for materials for work or keep up with fashion trends and as well as work out.
Being cool and "in" for teenagers is the concept behind this shopping mall. Since this design is targeted at students and teenagers, this then would attract them to thinking that if they hung out here, they would be considered "cool."

"Orchard Link". The building will be built at the piece of land
opposite SCAPE(Youth Hub).
NUKE is built as a extension of SCAPE, it would provide more
recreational facilities such as roller coasters, ice-rinks and also
go-kart tracks, it will also include studying facilities such as
classrooms, discussion rooms and also a public workspace, hence
reaching more Youths.
NUKE(Nuclear) as its name states, resembles a nuclear plant. The

go-karts. It also has a "Study Building" next to it resembling a
"Radioactive Sign". This Youth Hub is decided to have the theme "NUKE"
so that Youths will be attracted to the fun and weird design and it
also shows how impactful the Youths are to the society and the world.

Question 2

<Refer to picture 2>

Lesson 2

I will be showing 5 examples of real life applications of mechanisms (Levers, Linkages, gears, etc) either at home, playground, etc and explain how the mechanisms are being used effectively.

1) <Refer to picture 3>

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2197/2212013077_dc3cf83637.jpg

The above picture shows a pair of scissors. It is a lever and is being used effectively as the sharp blade focuses the pressure exerted by the hands onto a smaller area so that it is easier and more effective to cut something this way.

2)<Refer to picture 4>

http://i00.i.aliimg.com/photo/v1/318125826/soft_closing_cabinet_door_hinge.jpg

The above picture shows a door hinge. It is a system that comprises of springs (for retraction of door) and linkages. It is being used effectively as the linkages limit the door to a certain limit of movement (To prevent unnecessary injuries) and also the spring that helps to retract the door when closing to reduce the total amount of effort needed by the user to exert.

3) <Refer to picture 5>

http://www.cartuningpoint.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/coil-spring.jpg

The above picture shows a car spring. It is a spring mechanism and is being used effectively to reduce shaking (Shock absorber) in the car when it goes over obstacles or road humps. It also contributes to the car's handling and breaking for safety in driving

4) <Refer to picture 6>

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/thumblarge_534/1283239174Nd0Z7l.jpg

The above picture shows a car gearbox system. It is a system that comprises of multiple gears for the drivers to switch gears when necessary. It is being used effectively as when the car needs to go up a steep slope, the driver can switch to a smaller gear for a bigger gear ratio, such that the driver needs to turn more rounds than the driven and this contributes to the total amount of "power" the car has to move up the slope.

5) <Refer to picture 7>

http://www.personal.psu.edu/jlw1086/wheel_n_axle.jpg

The above picture shows a car steering system. It is a wheel and axle mechanism and is being used effectively by allowing the driver to use lesser effort to turn the steering wheel by letting the circumference of the wheel be a lot more than the axle's circumference. This thus makes the driver have more handling of the car and contributes to road safety. It also have "holes" in the steering wheel such that the driver can grab the wheel effectively and turn it smoothly. It also thus contributes to overall road safety.

The identified problematic situation:

<Refer to picture 8>

The above picture shows a portable fan (Ignore the table) that can be rotated vertically to change the angle that the fan blows. Although a useful and nice portable fan, I think there are some problems and the design can be improved.

Firstly, the fan would have an awkward centre of gravity and thus would be easy to flip over.

Secondly, the angle of rotation allowed for the fan to move (to me) is too wide and when rotated the wrong direction, would get the wire tangled.

Thirdly, the wire will get tangled as it is mounted at the back of the fan. I think it might be better to mount it at the base.

<Refer to picture 9>

Sorry for being late.. Had some difficulties..

It is being used effectively as when the car needs to go up a steep slope, the driver can switch to a smaller gear for a bigger gear ratio, such that the driver needs to turn more rounds than the driven and this contributes to the total amount of "power" the car has to move up the slope.

The above picture shows a portable fan (Ignore the table) that can be rotated vertically to change the angle that the fan blows. Although a useful and nice portable fan, I think there are some problems and the design can be improved.

Firstly, the fan would have an awkward centre of gravity and thus would be easy to flip over.

Secondly, the angle of rotation allowed for the fan to move (to me) is too wide and when rotated the wrong direction, would get the wire tangled.

Thirdly, the wire will get tangled as it is mounted at the back of the fan. I think it might be better to mount it at the base.ADMT 3.jpeg

Sorry for being late.. Had some difficulties..

eLearning Lesson 1 by Jurvis Tan (14)

Question 1
(a) Suggest a mechanism that would result in the above motion.
train track mechanisms?
(b) Sketch out how the suggested mechanisms are being applied to the design of the toy. Label your sketches. (Picture below)

E-learning Lesson 2 by Karan Sarat

Gears and a rack and pinion, gears used to feed the correction tape properly and the rack and pinion is used when you want to remove the existing cartridge when replacing it.

Linkages, connects the window to the wall in the room, allowing the window to open/close in an oscillating motion.

Linkages, the door is connected to the wall and is able to move in an oscillating motion.

Do you have fans at home?I'm sure you do. Over time they require frequent cleaning. Dust simply accumulates on these surfaces very quickly. So on these plastic fan blades I propose coating Durable Dust Repellent Coating on them. This reduces the number of times we have to wash them. Not only for the blades, but for the standing fans, the metal casing as well. Washing the metal casing causes rust to form, and applying coatings that repel the dust, will make fans more worthwhile to have.

eLearning Lesson 2 by Jaime_Pang (04) Part2

Part 2
I have chosen the problem of the paper cutter because users are unable to see the cutting line clearly.
Instead of using a sliding cutter,i chose to use a crank and slider linkage.By attaching a sharp cutter to the edge of the slider,it will be easier to see the cutting line.

eLearning Lesson 2 by Jaime_Pang (04)

Part 1
From the photo 1-3, it shows how linkages are used in the making of a foldable table.Photo 2 shows a close up on how the table leg is secured by the linkage.Photo 3 shows the bottom side of the table, there are two guides for each of the leg so as to fasten the legs down when the table is kept.
In photo 4,it shows how a linkage is used to slide open and close the drawer. The last photo shows how linkages are used to connect the door to the cabinet and how it enables the door to open and close.

eLearning Lesson 2 by Goh Jia Sheng (12)

Hi so this are my task 2.The first picture is the door hydraulic mechanism, the next one is a can opener it is a lever and the last picture is linkage and lever.

For part 2, I chose the problem to be using the can opener. This is because some people still use the old can opener and it needs lots of strength just to open the can so i drew a can opener which separate and there is a handle to turn it.It is eaier as the person only need to place the opener into the can and then he/she will split the opener to secure to can and pierce through part of the can top. After that he/she will just need to turn the handle which has been easier because I made the handle bigger.

eLearning Lesson 2 by Darryl Lam (11)

The first picture, is the cabinate door hinge it links the door and the cabinate together
The second pict is the chair lever to increase or decrease the height of the chair
The third picture is the sliding window, there are rollers bellow it.
